People Link Successes
We thought we'd take this opportunity to share with you some of the many successes we have had recently, to show that using the services of The People Link can make a big difference in your life or for your company. Employers and job seekers alike share these successes. Both employer and job seeker end up in a big smile.

This last week an employer called up asking for help with filling an Executive Secretary position. We had worked with this company before, their HR (Human Resources) Director usually calls up with her toughest requests. The last person that she hired for this position only lasted 2 months. The employee got engaged and is moving out of state. Prior to hiring her, she had interviewed over 50 applicants for the job, and when the one she hired turned in her notice after only 2 months, that was too much for her. She did not want to go through interviewing that many people again.

So the HR Director was a bit apathetic about the whole deal. So she called us and said "Please, you've got to help me with this. I need this job filled again and I can't go through what I just went through. Can you pleease help me out?" She was at this point in despair about ever finding the right person. Mya, at the People Link, answered the call and said "Sure, give me the job description and I'll see what I can come up with." As she was getting the job description over the phone, she knew that she had the exact right person available for them. When she described her prospect to the HR Director, she agreed and an interview was arranged for Friday afternoon.

This was on Monday afternoon this week.

In the meantime, the HR Director interviewed one more person with no luck. The interview occurred on Friday between the company and our prospect, and magic! They fell in love with each other and she was hired. The HR Director was so happy and relieved of having this problem finally resolved. It saved her 4th of July weekend. And, the job seeker was ecstatic too. This was exactly what she was looking for. She got an increased income, benefits, professional and good sized company to work for. Everything that she had been looking for, for the past month.

Both the HR Director and the job seeker called Mya late Friday night to express their thanks and gratitude. Everybody was smiling that day..

Taking The People Link advice was well worth it.

This employer is a fairly new startup company and their HR Director does not have much experience in the HR area. His request was for an administrative assistant to the Curriculum Director. The company produces educational programs on cable TV. The requirements for the job were that she had to be very knowledgeable in the English language, grammar and have very good writing skills. Experience in the entertainment industry would be a plus. But they were willing to pay $26,000 per year for the job. Mya, who took the call, looked over the data given and said, that from experience, she was not likely going to find someone with those particular skills at that salary. But, she had a job seeker looking for work right now, with the qualifications they want, asking for $35,000 annual salary.

Our advice was, meet with her, see if you like her and if she can fill the post. Maybe you can work out the salary requirements. It doesn't hurt to meet her. HR agreed and the interview was set up and it happened as scheduled. Our job seeker was very well received by the HR Director, the Curriculum Director and the other executives of the company. In fact she stayed all afternoon, met everyone involved and everybody agreed that she was exactly what they were looking for. They worked out how to cover the increase in salary from what they were first planning to pay. Everybody was ecstatic about it. By taking our advice, they got what they were really looking for.

Tips regarding current labor laws.

The State of California enacted an Interim Wage Order - 2000 effective March 1, 2000, that you may not have heard of. It is important to know about this change in the current labor laws. Here are a few items that we thought were the most important aspects of the change. Go to the State of California’s web site to get the full text of the notice. That web site is: http://www.dir.ca.gov/IWC/wageorderindustries.htm.

Change in overtime hours and pay. (Quotes from the Wage Order)

“Hours and Days of Work” “The number of hours worked in a day by covered employees without overtime compensation is 8 hours. The number of hours worked in a week by covered employees without overtime compensation is 40 hours. The number of days worked consecutively by covered employees in any workweek without overtime compensation is 6 days.”

“Daily Overtime Pay” “Overtime is paid at the rate of 1 1/2 times the regular rate of pay for every hour worked after the completion of 8 hours worked at the regular rate of pay in 1 workday. Overtime is paid at the rate of double the regular rate of pay for every hour worked after the completion of 12 hours worked in 1 workday.”

“Weekly Overtime Pay” “Overtime is paid at the rate of 1 1/2 times the regular rate of pay for every hour worked after the completion of 40 hours worked at the regular rate of pay in 1 workweek.”

One change that was enacted was the overtime pay requirement on a daily workday. These are just a few items in this order. Visit the page to get all the data.
