Who do you hire?
Recently, I have had several instances where, in my judgment, perfectly good candidates for a position were turned down, before they were even let in the door for an interview. They were willing to interview for the job based on location, pay and job description, and they possessed the basic qualifications for the position. Why would the employers not even see them for an interview? The answer is; they had a fixed idea about having a certain experience, not necessarily relevant to the job. Also, some employers used test results as a reason for turning down applicants, where again, in my judgment, they could have learned the job quickly enough and become a great employee.

What do you look for when choosing your new employee? I am sure you have seen people who have numerous impressive diplomas and certifications, but they are a real pain to work with. Personality traits do not show up on paper. They show up live in the person. Just because someone has the certifications or school diplomas, is he necessarily the better person for the job? Of course, if the job requires certain technical/specialized knowledge, you would not hire someone without it. But the example above was about general office positions.

Here's a tip regarding this. If the applicant is really interested in the job, would love to do it and has the basic qualifications, he/she may very well work out. The key question is; are they interested in this type of work and are they willing to learn everything there is to know about it?

If you have a person in front of you who has a very positive outlook on life, who knows what he/she wants to do in life, is not afraid of responsibility, can learn new things quickly and is willing to do a great job for you, then he/she may be worth more than all the tea in China. The person and his willingness are your greatest assets.

Maybe they haven't worked in this business exactly, but in similar positions, so is it really necessary to have a requirement that they have done this exact position before? For example, a dental office is looking for a front office manager to handle administrative duties, scheduling, phones, insurance billings and collections. The applicant has done the same job in a chiropractic office but would like to work in a dental office, would you not consider this person? Believe it or not, we have had cases where circumstances like this denied a perfectly good applicant the opportunity to apply. If you need a dental hygienist on the other hand, you would of course require that they have the necessary training for it. That's different though, they have to have that particular training to do the job.

Sometimes employers have requirements that may seem unreasonably strict, and this may stem from the fact that they do not train their staff on the job. If you had a training regiment set up for every single position in your company, you would be able to take on any bright willing applicant and make them a fully qualified employee. For those who cannot pass the training program, you either offer another position or send them on their merry way. But, by offering your own training on the job, you will have the employees you need. Many businesses do this very successfully.

What we at the People Link focus on is the person. What is it that they really want to work with and produce? We then match them up with the employers who offer just that.

Frequently Asked Questions.

I thought it would be useful and informative to include some FAQs from time to time to help bring about a greater understanding about our services. Here's the 2nd installment of the People Link FAQs:

1) Do you have a web site where I can see what is available?
Yes, our web site is at http://www.thepeoplelink.com. Go to the Jobs link. It lists our current jobs available. It is updated on a regular basis with new jobs. On the Employers page you can also download our contract agreement for the specific terms we operate on. And, you can also see a picture of the one and only, Mya Borgman.

2) Do you place people anywhere in the US?
Yes. Just let us know what is needed and wanted and we’ll get to work on it.

3) Do you pre qualify job applicants?
Yes. We do a thorough interview of all job seekers and before we suggest anyone to an employer we make sure that all the requirements are met and agreed upon by the job seeker. If some portion of the requirements is not met exactly as stated we go over this with the employer along with our reason for why this particular person would be a good candidate anyway. As stated in the article on page one, if we believe that the applicant will be a great asset to the employer, we will suggest him or her.

4) I need to do a promotion campaign for my company and I need a very competent experienced graphics artist who knows Photoshop, Quark Express or Adobe Illustrator. I can afford to pay about $10.00 - 11.00 per hour. Can you help?
No. These fish don’t swim the oceans.
